5 Common Orthopedic Conditions Athletes Might Develop

Did you know that babies come into the world with over 300 bones in their body? By adulthood many of these bones will merge, reducing that number to 206 exactly. Orthopedics is the study of bones, joints, and muscles and how they interact with each other. The more we know about bones, the more we can develop solutions to orthopedic conditions. The following is a list of some of the most common orthopedic conditions that occur due to sports-related injuries.

  1. Strained Hip Flexor
    Hip flexors are the muscles on the inside and outside of your legs that run along your hipbone. An interior strain is associated with pain raising your knees, as well as potential bruising around your groin in severe cases. This can be caused by lack of stretching before running sprints or making quick directional changes.
  2. Anterior Cruciate Ligament Tear
    Tearing your ACL is a potentially career-ending injury that often results from rapid deceleration. Many athletes live in fear of ACL injuries, and for good reason. This crucial joint is found in your knee and usually requires complicated orthopedic surgery to heal. Pain treatment might also be necessary for this injury. The road to recovery will certainly include pain inducing physical therapy.
  3. Shin Splints
    If you are a long distance runner who ramped up their training too quickly, you are likely to have experienced shin splints. They affect the tibia but are not a terribly dangerous injury when treated properly. Most cases only require ice and rest while slowly reintegrating a training program.
  4. Concussions
    A concussion is essentially a brain bruise. Your skull, with a strong enough impact, will stay steady while your brain is forced into it, which causes the brain matter to bruise. And, yes, these injuries are as dangerous as they sound! Rest and recover before returning to your regular activities, and always see a physician following a potential concussion — your brain is pretty important, after all.
  5. Shoulder Injuries
    This is a rather large umbrella term used to describe a wide range of orthopedic conditions. Since your shoulder is the weakest joint in your body, it is susceptible to many injuries ranging from a simple strained muscle to a much more devastating torn rotator cuff.
